Hiking tips #5 : Göteborg from above

When it comes to visiting a new city, there is nothing I like more than climbing hills and towers to enjoy wonderful panoramic views. And that, no matter the number of steps on the way =).

If you are like me, this is a selection of places where you can enjoy the view of Göteborg “from above”.

Skansen Kronan – A view over Haga

View on the Kronan from Slottskögen tower

Closest tram stops : Hagakyrkan (3, 6, 11) or Järntorget (1, 3, 6, 9, 11)

The closest place to the city center is Skansen Kronan, accessible from my favorite district Haga. The steps might discourage some of you but they look worse than what they actually are. Up there, the Kronan offers both a piece of Swedish history and a nice view over the city. On the way down, do not hesitate to have a walk in Haga and stop for a fika =).

Masthuggskyrkan – A Church on top of Masthuggstorget

View on Masthuggstorget from Slottskögen tower

Closest tram stops : Stigberstorget (1, 3, 6, 9, 10, 11) or Fjällgatan (11) – Closest bus stop : Fjällskolan (60, 190)

Built on top of a hill, in a national romantic style in Nordic architecture, Masthuggskyrkan is one of the symbols of Göteborg. It is also a nice place to watch the sunset on the river. And if you are brave enough to walk up there from the Kronan, do not hesitate to stop by Oscar Fredrik Kyrkan which offers a beautiful and colorful architecture.

Guldhedstornets Café – Water tower café

View from the water tower café

Closest tram stop : Medicinaregatan (6, 7, 8, 13) or Sahlgrenska Huvudentré (6, 7, 8, 13) – Closest bus stop : Syster Estrids gata (52)

Do you want to admire the city and have a fika at the same time? Then this place is made for you =). Built on top of an old water tower, Guldhedstornets Café offers delicious and cheap pastries, a wonderful and legendary hot chocolate and a 360° view of the city. A place to visit !

Slottskögen hidden tower

Slottskögen wooden tower – A tower in the middle of the woods

Closest tram stop : Linneplasten (1, 2, 6 – bus 52) or Botaniska Trädgården (1, 2, 6, 8)

Do you want to have a romantic moment ? To admire the sunset with your loved one ? If you want a bit of intimacy, there is no better place that this wooden tower, in the middle of a clearing, hidden in Slottskögen’s forest. Situated nearby the old ski jump, it is accessible through various little paths. You will love losing yourself up there.

Sörhallsberget – Small hill nearby the river

View on the bridge and the river from Slottskögen tower

Closest ferry stop : Slottsberget, Eriksberg, – Closest bus stop: Sörhallstorget (16)

Situated on the other side of the river, Sörhallsberget offers a beautiful view on the river and the city center side. If you want to enjoy a nice walk nearby, the river side exposes various piece of art on the way to Eriksberg, where you can find the impressive remaining crane of the old ships’ building area.

View on another hill from Slottskögen tower

Ramberget – The hill over Göteborg

Closest stop : Wieselgrensplatsen (tram 4, 6, 10, 13)

Also on the “other” side of the river, Ramberget is a huge hill that offers nice view of all Göteborg. Ramberget is a beautiful piece of nature, amazing in winter with the snow but also a nice place for summer barbecues. To visit with friends !

This was an non-exhaustive selection but Göteborg is built in the middle of hills and forests and lots of places remain to be discovered. Hope you will enjoy those places as much as I do =).
