New country, new language! Take the chance to learn Swedish

As many of you probably have noticed, Swedes speak very good English and it is very easy for all foreigner people to communicate for anything they need.
However, one of the exciting things about living in a new country is the fact that you have the chance to get familiar with a new language. It will help you to get a better understanding about the native people and their culture and be able to participate in discussions and maybe make new friends. If anything, it is always nice when people make an effort to speak in your own language. It is also a good qualification to add to your CV and even more for those who are thinking to search for a job here in Sweden. The good thing is that in Sweden you have the chance to learn the language for free!

The University of Gothenburg offers some Swedish courses for beginners as well as for more advanced level. The only thing you need to do is to check the university’s web site for the registration days. There is usually a great demand for these courses especially for beginners level, so be alert for deadlines.

For those who would like to take further education in Swedish language there is the opportunity to attend the courses provided by the state, the Swedish For Immigrants (SFI). The municipalities are responsible to ensure that each applicant who is eligible to attend these courses will be offered a place. For further information you can visit the following web page: http://eductus.se/newinsweden/swedish-for-immigrants-sfi/

Other options are the Swedish courses that the city libraries offer. In particular every Monday between 16.30-18.30 in the Majorna Library (Majornas bibliotek) in Chapmans Torg 5, you can speak Swedish with volunteers and have a coffee or tea. The entrance is free.
Every Wednesday in the City Library (Stadsbiblioteket ) in Götaplatsen ,from 2016-01-11 to 2016-05-30, between 17.30-18.30 you can practice in speaking and understanding Swedish. Registration is not required.

And finally, after some time when you feel more confident with you linguistic skills and want to check what you’ve learned, there are several language cafes in the city that you can visit. There you can enjoy a drink and discuss in Swedish with other international people as well as Swedes. Two options that I recommend are the språkcafe in Biskopsgårdens bibliotek (Vårväderstorget 3), which operates every Thursday between 16.30-18.00 with free entrance and also in the city you can find the Språkcafeet in Esperantoplatsen 7-9, where every Thursday between 17.30-20.00 they have the Swedish evening, where you can train. To participate in the group there is a small price you need to pay.

Don’t miss the challenge!
