That is why one of the first things that I looked for when I was looking for masters abroad, was (a part of a good master and good courses, of course), that the city had a rugby team. And here I came, to Gothenburg, to the best master programme that I could imagine for what I wanted to learn… And, even if I didn’t know at the beginning, to the best team in Sweden!
The girls on this team have many years of experience and it has been a unique opportunity for me to learn from each one of them. It has been a great season, we won the Swedish championship and lots of other tournaments, but the best thing is not the winning part. The best thing is gaining the experience and enjoying every moment. Every moment of a game, that you fight no matter what result is in the scoreboard; every moment with your teammates, that will always be there to support you; every moment of frustration, followed by a moment of overcoming; every moment in front of the rival, that becomes a friend at the end of the game. This is what rugby is about.
Rugby is not a famous sport in Sweden and we are not many teams playing, but still, this country can surprise you publishing about the final twice in Göteborg-Posten, with long articles and pictures, a newspaper that everybody in the city reads! This would be unthinkable where I come from, where only exists football in the newspapers, and women categories are even more hidden. One more of the hundreds of reasons why to love Sweden!
One of the first things that you have to get used to is that the season is completely backwards at how it is in the rest of Europe. In Spain, for example, we start on September and finish around May. Here we start in May, and we finish in October. When you experience your first winter here you understand why!
Now, the season is over, but both men and women team still have some trainings on Saturday afternoons, just touch, that it’s like playing rugby without contact, so you are welcome to try it if you are new at this! And if you already played rugby before, you are also completely welcome to come! Anybody can join these trainings at Valän (Västra Frölunda), and the upcoming winter indoor trainings at Frölunda Kulturhus (that start around December).
